If you’re diving into the Valenwood expansion for Betrayal of the Second Era, you’re essentially doubling down on everything that makes Chip Theory Games both brilliant and a bit of a table hog. This isn't just a more of the same map pack; it brings the home of the Bosmer to life with a specific focus on stealth and utility that feels like a unique addition from the base game. The biggest highlight for me is the introduction of the Arcanist and Burglar classes. Finally having dedicated skill lines for Illusion and Security (Lockpicking) adds that classic Elder Scrolls "stealth-archer" or "silver-tongued mage" flavor that felt like a slight gap in the core box. Building a character with the new Legerdemain skills genuinely changes how you approach non-combat encounters, making the RPG side of the game feel much crunchier.
The region itself feels appropriately wild and overgrown. The new Gazetteer and province-specific enemies, like the forest-dwelling Spriggans and unique Bosmer adversaries, really lean into the lore of the Green Pact. I love that the expansion content is modular too, because you can shuffle the new items, general enemies, and skill lines into any campaign, even if you aren't questing in Valenwood itself. The double-sided clash mat is a nice touch, also, by swapping the standard arena for mushroom-heavy forest floors that help with the immersion.
My only real caveat is that it adds even more keywords and status effects to an already heavy system. If you’re still struggling with the core rules, adding Valenwood might feel like more letters in your keyword soup at first. But for anyone who has finished a few campaigns and is looking for more build variety, this is a must-have. It turns the character-building sandbox into a much deeper experience, and seeing the Bosmer lore treated with this much respect is a treat for any longtime fan of Tamriel.
